Fusion: Intercultural Couples

Sydney ranks among the most multicultural cities of the world. In the 1970s, Australia opened its doors to immigrant settlers from around the globe and transformed Sydney into what it is today: a metropolis in which 4 million people who originated from over 180 countries and who speak over 140 languages live cheek by jowl.

These photographs are a series of portraits of intercultural couples in Sydney. Questions that were addressed were how ‘mixed couples’ negotiate race, religion, and culture within the private sphere? Does each member maintain his or her racial, religious, and cultural distinctiveness and/or does one culture tend to outweigh the other? Through this investigation, I aimed to show how differences and diversity play out, not at a macro level, but at the personal, micro level.
